Pokémon TCG Abyss Eye Set Featuring Mega Darkrai ex Officially Revealed

The Pokémon TCG keeps building momentum through 2026, and the latest reveal is one that Dark-type fans have been waiting for. Abyss Eye, the fifth Japanese set in the Mega Evolution series, has officially been announced and it puts the spotlight firmly on Mega Darkrai ex, the first Mega Evolution from the Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC to make its debut in the Trading Card Game.

What Is Abyss Eye?

Abyss Eye is officially the M5 MEGA Expansion Pack for the Japanese Pokémon TCG, scheduled for release on May 22, 2026. The set introduces Mega Darkrai ex to the Pokémon TCG for the first time, drawn directly from the Legends: Z-A video game. PokeGuardian

The reveal itself was handled with a flair of drama. The Pokémon Company delayed the release of the trailer by four hours specifically so it would coincide precisely with the timing of the real-world new moon in Japan. Wargamer A clever bit of marketing that perfectly matches the dark, mysterious theme of the set.

For collectors outside Japan, the English equivalent has already been confirmed. The English set will be called Pitch Black and is set to release on July 17, 2026, with prereleases running from July 4 to July 12. PokéBeach Darkrai is known as the "Pitch-Black" Pokémon, making it a fitting name for the English adaptation. PokéBeach

How Many Cards Are in the Set?

Abyss Eye is a small expansion made up of just 81 cards in the main set, making it the smallest of the current Mega Evolution cycle. That compares to Perfect Order at 88, Phantasmal Flames at 94, and Chaos Rising at 86. Wargamer Secret rares are expected to bring the total to around 120 cards, in line with previous sets in the series.

Abyss Eye will also be the first set to release at a new price point, with single packs now priced at 200 yen, up from 180 yen previously. PokeGuardian This price increase has been noted across the collecting community and is worth factoring in if you're planning to import Japanese packs. Mega Darkrai ex operates as a Basic Mega Evolution ex card with a massive 280 HP. Essential Japan Its two attacks are where things get really interesting for both collectors and competitive players.

Night Raid does 110 damage, with an additional 110 if any of your Benched Pokémon have damage counters on them, meaning it can swing for 220 in the right board state. The second attack, also named Abyss Eye, instantly knocks out the opponent's Active Pokémon if they are affected by any Special Condition. PokéBeach

That second attack is genuinely powerful. Thanks to the newly revealed Dark Bell card included in Abyss Eye, applying a Special Condition to the opponent's Active Pokémon looks straightforward enough to achieve, making Abyss Eye potentially a deadly threat in the Pokémon TCG standard meta. Joseph Writer Anderson One-hit knockout attacks are always high value in a format dominated by three-Prize Mega Pokémon ex, and Darkrai's version comes with a built-in synergy piece right in the same set.

As a Mega Evolution ex, the standard rule applies: if Mega Darkrai ex is Knocked Out, your opponent takes three Prize cards. PokéBeach High risk, high reward, exactly in line with the Mega Evolution era's gameplay identity.

Other Cards Revealed So Far

Leaning heavily into its Dark-type theme, the other Pokémon-based cards revealed for Abyss Eye so far are all the same type as Mega Darkrai. Inkay, Malamar, Chi-Yu, and Zarude have all been shown alongside the headliner. TheGamer

It's a tight, focused roster that fits the dark aesthetic of the set perfectly. Malamar in particular has historically been a strong supporting Pokémon in the TCG, so its inclusion alongside Mega Darkrai is worth keeping an eye on from a competitive standpoint.

What About the English Release?

For collectors in Dubai and across the MENA region, the key date to watch is July 17, 2026. Pitch Black will be an almost 1:1 copy of Abyss Eye, similar to how Phantasmal Flames, Perfect Order, and Chaos Rising were all near-direct English adaptations of their Japanese counterparts. PokéBeach

This means everything revealed in Abyss Eye now gives you a strong preview of what to expect from the English set in July. If you want to get ahead of the curve and experience the set in Japanese first, it releases on May 22, the same day as Chaos Rising drops for English collectors.

Speaking of which, if you haven't grabbed your Chaos Rising packs yet, we still have Chaos Rising booster packs and booster boxes in stock. And if you want to see what a graded Mega Evolution card looks like at the top end of the market, browse our Graded Cards collection for reference.

What Comes After Abyss Eye?

The second half of 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest periods in recent Pokémon TCG history. Following Abyss Eye, Japan has Storm Emeralda featuring Mega Rayquaza ex scheduled for July 31, three MEGA Starter Set ex Decks featuring Eevee ex, Zoroark ex, and Meowscarada ex also on July 31, and a 30th Celebration set in September. PokéBeach There's also the mysterious Aura Seeker set, possibly featuring Mega Lucario Z, with no confirmed date yet.

For English collectors that maps to a packed schedule through the rest of the year, with Pitch Black in July likely to be followed by the Rayquaza set in September and the 30th anniversary celebration in October. It's a great time to be collecting.
